A 52-year-old Tampa man died Sunday night after suffering critical injuries sustained in a motorcycle collision earlier in the day.
A 58-year-old Brooksville man driving a 2002 Mercedes apparently turned left into the man’s path, causing the man’s motorcycle to strike the Mercedes.
The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, but was critically injured and taken to Bayonet Point Medical Center in Hudson. He died later in the day on Sunday.
The driver of the Mercedes was not harmed.
The crash is currently being investigated further.
Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable when it comes to injuries sustained in any collision with an automobile. Compared to cars, motorcycles are less visible, and unfortunately, not all motorists make a conscious effort to watch out for others sharing the roadways before changing lanes or attempting a left turn. When drivers fail to pay attention to other vehicles on the roadway, avoidable tragic accidents can occur.
Motorcycle collision injuries can still cause severe and catastrophic injuries even when bikers wear helmets and protective gear. This is due to the fact that motorcyclists have very little protection between them and the road and can be navigating at high speeds when accidents happen. Car vs. motorcycle accidents can cause numerous injuries, including road rash, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, back and neck injuries, broken bones and fractures and severe burn injuries. Sadly, many collisions involving motorcycles and passenger vehicles result in wrongful death.
Motorcycle riders struck by a car are three times more likely to be seriously injured and 14 times more likely to be killed than a person injured in a collision between two cars.
